The Rules.

oo1; The Basics. As in every community, we ask that you follow the same simple rules. Do not mix OOC/IC, do not God Mod, do not make Mary Sues, do not make your usernames something like [info]lilredbabee02 or [info]wonderssxxxland and make it have something to do with your character, something like [info]aliddell or [info]littlexred.

oo2; Activity. You must update your character journal or participate in an active thread every 2 weeks. You can of course do so more often, but that's the bare minimum. Each entry should consist of at least two well-developed paragraphs. We understand that not all characters are the type who would use their journals, so the other option is threading. If you choose to use a thread as your update requirement, your responses to the thread must be equal to the amount of work you would put into an entry. This means no one-sentence replies will be accepted. As mods, we completely understand that RL comes up and sometimes activity requirement can not be met. If this happens, please just let us know! We will be more than happy to work with you if that's what you need.

oo3; Hiatuses. Hiatuses can be either announced in the OOC community, [info]wondersland, or you can PM or IM the mods directly. We tend to be very understanding about hiatuses (Hey, we've all had to take them!), though if we don't hear from you for a month, you'll probably be on the next activity check and then dropped. If that happens, and you come back and want to play, just contact the mods; generally, we can add you back without a new app, just talk to us!

oo4; Character Complexities. Dealing with your characters; as they are based off of actual fantasy characters, we ask that when you are applying you give them the name that they are dubbed with in their fairy tale/fantasy book. If they are not listed, then this rule is by means wavered. We do, however, ask that their chosen name has something to do with their character. For example; in Alice in Wonderland the main character is Alice Liddell. The person applying for Alice would have to keep this name. If someone decided to apply for the Knave of Hearts, however, they would be able to give him a name of their choosing as long as it was related--something like "Jack Heart" would fit quite nicely. The exception to this will be for foreign names - for example, if you wanted to play Uzumaki Naruto, you could make his name "Nathan Usher" if you didn't want to make them from Japan. We also ask that you keep your characters realistic, as well as the situations that they will encounter within the game. There is room for all manner of shenanigans in the game, but they are in a hospital.

oo5; Miscellany. Last but not least; have fun, bitches! There is an almost endless well of creativity to draw characters from, and any number of crazy situations and interactions to shove them in to. The point is to play, to experiment, and to have a good time. That's what makes it work!

As a warning; this community will have mature themes; death, violence, incest, rape, cursing. Threads will be cut and marked appropriately, but if these things will bother you, Cheshire might not be the best choice.

Feel free to contact the mods with any questions; Elizabeth can be found on AIM at YouJustSayBingo, Bri can be reached at girly deadpool.

FAQ.

Can I play an animal from fairy tales as well?

Yes you may! As long as it is a person who displays the characteristics of the animal in the fairy tale, fantasy book, or myth, anyone is up for grabs!

Are the crazies really all given IJs or are they really just journals?

There is no IJ for them, no. Computers are off limits in Cheshire Crossing. The journals are given to them by their doctors and are completely private except for when their therapist reads them. This means your character would have to be careful what they put in there if they can make the connection that it's going to be read by their doctor. No rambling about cutting or suicide if you don't want to be locked in the quiet room, no talks about killing people if you don't expect something to happen about it, and no talks of sexual acts between other patients if you don't want it to be stopped. Other people can comment if you can think up a logical way for the person to have gotten a hold of their journal. You should note in the subject line of the comment "Note left between pages of SO AND SOS Journal."

So how do the introductions work?

The main community is basically a bulletin board. New patients are asked to write up an introduction letter that is posted for the other patients to see, who may then reply to the letter with their own.

So how do people interact with each other without doing threads constantly?

The main community! The same way you had to have your characters post an introduction letter in the main community, you can have them leave notes that anyone--or just certain people--may respond to. Again, it's basically like the big message board for the entire community to interact through, so that you don't have to be doing threads all the time if you don't want to be.

Do I have to stay exactly to the fairy tale when writing up a history?

Just as long as the main plot is evident, it's alright. Not everyone can have a fantasy world made up in their head that everyday people are pulled into. People like Little Red Riding Hood could have been walking to their grandmother's house and kidnapped by a man on the street who seduced her with candies or flowers; Gaston could be a man who suffers from severe narcissism and sociopathic tendencies, killing those who get what he thinks he deserves. Etc., etc., etc. We do however ask that you keep the personality and main characteristics as close to the original characters as possible.

So do they just think they're the characters or are they actually them?

They actually don't think that they are fictional characters. Patients will have characteristics of the people that they are based off of, however, in Cheshire, no one will be aware of the fairy tale from which they originated. The fairy tales in this world never existed and are merely the products of the characters psychosis. Some don't even have a fantasy world and are merely tied into the ones of other patients. For example, the Cheshire Cat or the Queen of Hearts doesn't have to see Wonderland and can merely have the personality of the characters, but Alice can warp them to be a part of her world in her head. The two wouldn't even know Wonderland existed. They also wouldn't be aware of any books or movies that corresponded with their delusions. i.e. Alice In Wonderland would never be brought up, because for all intensive purposes, it doesn't exist in this universe.

Can I make a minor character a doctor or nurse or the like?

Yep! They can again hold the personality of the character from the tale and be pulled into the "fairy tale" by the main character(s) of the story.

How many disorders can my character have?

As many as you can realistically string together!

What year is it and where is the hospital located?

Today. Right now. This very second. As for the location, the hospital is located in America. Where? Well, if we told you the exact location, we'd have to kill you, but somewhere in New England so they can experience all four seasons.

Where do I post my application?

You may either post it in comments to the application post or (and preferably) you may post it as an entry in your journal and leave a link for it on the application post. Either way, it will get reviewed, so just do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Do you accept characters from webcomics?

I must admit, I'm a huge fan of the obscure-fandom characters, and have several myself. With that said, it would really depend on your app. I wouldn't say that we accept webcomic characters across the board, no questions asked, but if an app came in for one and the player clearly understood the character and could write them, then I would absolutely approve it.

So, sure! Contingent on the application, of course.

In regards to PB, are they required to be a celebrity, or will there be room for others (they are still human and very much real, of course ;D)? I only ask because I've a perfect avatar of the character I am wanting to apply, and just wanted to make sure.

That would really have to depend on the PB and the quality of pictures you would provide. Generally, they need to be a musician, a model, a celebrity, etc. We don't really accept cam girls, scene kids, etc.

I would be willing to give a look to a non-celeb PB, we have two in the game currently and I think they work fine. However, that doesn't mean I will accept one. It just all depends, really.

If you want to clear the PB with me, just catch me on AIM at playingLcynical. I'll be on after about 6 pm CST tonight.

first of all, thank you for the hold ♥ but i do have two quick questions, re: names and third person sample.

for names, it's mentioned that if a character already has an established name, they should keep that name unless it's abstract (i.e. alice in wonderland). but since dinah is, well, a cat's name in the book, is it at all okay if i merely change her name around (as she is a pre-established muse, and i do so like her first name) to suit dinah rather than name her that directly? (.. does that make sense? god i need sleep.)

and for samples: well, the first person is self-explanatory. but i'd like to inquire about the third person, since the expectations are somewhat ambiguous, annnddd i'm not quite sure what a... third person thread is, even though i've looked at other characters' samples. i could just be really tired here and therefore derping, but do you want... a solo? or an action scene with an npc?

... wow this got long. those were not quick at all, ahaha. thank you in advannceee

Of course <3

As for names, I think that would be fine.

As for samples, if you have a third-person thread from another comm you may use that, or you can write a thread start with your character, or a narrative. It's your call, really. As for what a third person thread is...it's simply two or more characters interacting in a thread together. If you don't have any previous journal-rp experience, just write a two paragraph (or more) narrative with your character.

Don't worry at all about asking questions, I'm really more than happy to help!

So, are OC's the characters who portray the fantasy characters?

I'm afraid I don't really understand your question. Technically, there are no OC's in Cheshire, as every character must be based on characters from fairytales, mythologies, movies, books, etc. But because they are played as real mental patients, they require a lot of creativity/customization. If that doesn't answer your question, you can either ping me on AIM (playingLcynical) or ask again here.

Thanks! I hope that helped!!

I wasn't sure where else to ask, so I figured here would be okay (hopefully). Would a character from xxxHolic be alright? I saw you had characters from Naruto, but I wasn't sure if all anime/manga would be allowed.

Is this meant to be a take off Damned at LJ or somewhat related?

No? I've not heard of that game, actually, but Cheshire's been around quite a long time, first on GJ and now on IJ.

After looking up the game in question, I feel comfortable saying that no, this game is really nothing like Damned at all, save the fact that they are both asylum-based.

Question, if approved, do I have to make a fancy history post in my characters journal with a picture and the whole storyline part at the bottom?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]cheshiremods
2009-10-20 03:38 am UTC (link)
Yes and no. We prefer that you at least leave the app up in the journal for other players to refer too. It does not need to be in any sort of fancy format, however, as long as the character's original information is there!

Question! Would an Egyptian Queen, such as Ankhesenamun, be permitted?

Unfortunately, we do not allow any actual historical figures to be played. Fictional Egyptian queens would be fine!
